Dr. F. Batmanghelidj’, M.D., wrote one of the most ground breaking and thought provoking books on the importance of water in our daily diet. Dr.Batmanghelidj’ believed that most illness is caused by dehydration.
Dr. F. Batmanghelidj’ was an internationally known researcher, author, and lecturer. He was born and raised in Iran. During the Iranian revolution in 1979 Dr. Batmanghelidj’ was held as a politcal prison for almost three years. It was during his incarceration that he learned the importance that water plays in our daily lives.
According to Dr. B., the quench for thirst can already be a sign of slight dehydration. Also, Dr. B. is quick to point out that sodas (aka pop, colas, and soft drinks), coffee, tea, and alcohol are all very dehdrating to the body.
A simple rule for daily water intake is to consume half your body weight in ounces of water on a daily basis. This would mean that if you weigh 150 pounds then your daily goal is to drink 75 ounces (a little over two liters) of water. This will definitely help keep your body well hydrated.
If we were to look at the importance of water from a philosophical view then we are reminded of how the late Bruce Lee encouraged us, “To Be Like Water.”
